The Weekly 5 Featuring Stranger Things
Welcome to The Weekly 5! This week was full of horror-related trailers and articles (but let’s be honest, what week isn’t for me). Let’s dive in!
1. Stranger Things 4 Trailer
I’m all for Robert Englund making an appearance in the final season of Stranger Things. I’ve really enjoyed the show and I’m curious how they’ll wrap it up.
2. 10 Upcoming Blumhouse Projects Horror Fans Should Be Excited For
Sinister and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson returns this summer to deliver a haunting horror tale with The Black Phone.
Originally, The Black Phone was supposed to be out already, but got shifted to a prime June 24th date after it received rave reviews out of its premiere at last year's Fantastic Fest. It’s a supernatural horror story of a young boy trying to survive against a masked killer. It has been labeled as a chilling coming-of-age story with major Sinister vibes. Ethan Hawke’s performance as The Grabber has been immensely praised.
Blumhouse is working on a bunch of Stephen King adaptations, but I’m honestly looking forward to their adaptation of The Black Phone the most.
3. “Nightmares & Dreamscapes” – Revisiting TNT’s Stephen King Horror Event Series from 2006
One of King’s many stories about authors, “Umney’s Last Case” is a love letter to Raymond Chandler’s pulpy detective stories. It’s about a hard-boiled gumshoe circa 1938 whose world is upended when the author of his life reveals himself. William H. Macy (Fargo) plays both roles, earning himself an Emmy nomination for the dual performance. Director Rob Bowman(Reign of Fire) and writer April Smith embrace the Chandler pastiche, with King’s clever twist on the material subverting the tropes.
Alex DiVincenzo, who I’ve had the pleasure of talking horror with on multiple occasions, revisits Nightmares & Dreamscapes in this article for Bloody Disgusting. It’s by no means a masterpiece but there are plenty of familiar faces and some fun moments throughout the series.
4. Candy Trailer
I’m not familiar with the case this is based on, but the show looks wild so I’m here for it.
5. Mike Mignola Returns to Hellboy
Mike Mignola and Márk László, along with colorist Dave Stewart, return with an explosive one-shot to continue the story they began in “The Miser’s Gift,” part of the “Hellboy Winter Special” from January 2020.
I just bought a bunch of Hellboy comics so that I could finally dig into the series, which makes this some timely news. I’ve heard great things so it’s fun to see that Mignola is returning, even if it’s just for a one-shot.
Content of the Week
Over on Welcome to Geekdom, I talked to Sam Romesburg and Ben Roberts about their comic Children of the Grave.
Drew Dietsch returned to Chat Sematary to discuss Frank Darabont’s first Stephen King adaptation: The Woman in the Room.
I’m finally trying to get back in the swing of doing YouTube videos after taking pretty much a few weeks off. The Shining mini-series turned 25 so it felt like a good time to quickly talk about it.
That’s all for this week!
