The Weekly 5 Featuring Skywalker Sound
Welcome to The Weekly 5 where I share 5 things I enjoyed from the week!
1. Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound
This was hands down my favorite thing that I watched this week. As a big audio nerd, seeing how they make the sound effects in massive movies and all of the gear they use was amazing.
2. How Does Horror Comedy Work?
This is not a new video by any means, but I love these video essays from Patrick H. Willems. Plus, I was in a Sam Raimi mood thanks to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
3. The Colin and Samir Show
I downloaded a few episodes of the podcast version of The Colin and Samir Show and the Mr. Beast interview is great. It is long though, so maybe just head to their channel and check out some of the other interviews they’ve done. Which podcasts I listen to typically comes in waves. When I first started listening, it was a bunch of tech and sports podcasts, but as I’ve started creating podcasts and videos, I’ve been leaning into business and interviews with other creators a lot more lately.
4. Failure to Burn: Revisiting the Original ‘Firestarter’ Movie
The movie adaptation of Firestarter was seemingly doomed from the start. John Carpenterwas originally set to direct and commissioned two drafts of the script, one by Bill Lancaster who also wrote the screenplay for Carpenter’s The Thing. But due to the famously bad reception of that special effects masterwork, Universal decided to remove Carpenter from the project. He was replaced with Mark Lester, best known at the time for Roller Boogie and Class of 1984. His directorial style in Firestarter lacks any kind of artistry, consisting of mostly straightforward scenes. Considering The Thing has now cemented its status as one of the greatest horror films of all time, it’s difficult not to wonder what might have been.
Jenn Adams from The Losers’ Club Podcast, who I have had the pleasure of speaking with a couple times now, did a great write up on the original Firestarter. The new one is out today, so be sure to check out both if you haven’t!
5. Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off
I watched this documentary the other night and loved it. I put together a Twitter thread with some thoughts while I watched and you can check it out now on HBO Max.
Content of the Week
Over on Welcome to Geekdom, Murjani Rawls and I took on the task of watching Howard the Duck. It was… something.
I also put out a video on how bad the web experience is now that ComiXology migrated to Amazon.
That’s all for this week. I hope you all found something to enjoy!
