The Weekly 5 Featuring Shudder
Welcome back to The Weekly 5! It’s been a hectic week, but I wanted to highlight some stuff about and from one of my favorite streaming services, Shudder. (Which you should check out if you haven’t yet!)
1. How horror streamer Shudder keeps killing with original content
Engler arrived at Shudder while the platform was mid-metamorphosis. It was an AMC Networks initiative known internally as “Shudder 2.0,” which involved wading into original content and possibly zooming out to other genres. Engler ran with the first idea, shepherding Shudder’s first-ever original series, Creepshow, into production later that year. (It recently got picked up for a fourth season.) But he pushed back against the second idea. Horror is a big enough sandbox to play in, he reasoned, that Shudder need not include Asian action flicks and other movies that fall into the genre broadly known as genre.
This is a great read from Joe Berkowitz over at Fast Company. I love what Shudder has done, especially with their original content.
2. Creepshow
Speaking of Creepshow, I’m going to recommend checking that out if you do have Shudder. I don’t think it quite captures what the first anthology movie does, but it still had Stephen King adaptations so you know I had to watch it.
3. The Stepfather
This movie took me by surprise and I ended up enjoying it. It’s not a perfect movie, but if you’re looking for something to watch that isn’t 3 seasons long like Creepshow, give this a shot.
4. Cursed Films II Trailer
Shudder is bringing back Cursed Films, which is a series that gives a behind-the-scenes look at some bizarre and unsettling things that happened on the sets of various movies.
5. Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror
Last, and certainly not least, is Horror Noire. It’s one of my favorite documentaries that I’ve watched in recent years and if any of you like horror as much, if not more, than I do, this is a must watch. You’re bound to learn something that you didn’t know from this.
Content of the Week
Over on Welcome to Geekdom, I discussed The Dark Knight Returns with Murjani Rawls.
And over on YouTube I talked about some Doctor Strange comics.
Hope you all enjoyed your week!
